Why shoot on a RED camera?
In non-technical terms, the images are amazing: the output quality is similar to film. RED records images on a 12 megapixel sensor with horizontal resolutions of 4096 (4K) pixels. Most digital to 35mm Film outs are 1/4 the size of that resolution. RED's large sensor eliminates in-camera-sharpening--the reason for that "video look" on other HD cameras. The RED's sensor is the same size of super 35mm film negative. This allows you the Depth of Focus found in standard P/L 35mm film lenses--without the need of adapters. And with a dynamic range of about 11 stops, the RED allows you to get superior, film-quality images. Additionally, renting a RED is vastly less expensive than producing on film.

What does 4K resolution mean?
4K refers to the horizontal size of RED's sensor. The 4520 pixels horizontally by 2540 pixels vertically gives the RED the equivalent of 12 megapixel DSLR imagery. At 4K 2:1 the RED captures a frame at 4096 x 2048 pixels. 4K 16:9 the RED captures a frame at 4096 x 2304 pixels. This area would cover 4 SEPARATE HD frames at 1920 x 1080 each.

How does the sensor size compare to the frame sizes of film & tape?
Most 35 mm film outs that have gone through a scanning process have been scanned at 2K, or one quarter the resolution of 4K. Only extremely high content VFX work is generally scanned as high as 4K. Viewers that see RED footage for the first time either describe the quality as 65 mm film or "grainless 35". Also, the RED's ultra low grain means it's fantastic for green-screening & VFX work.

Where does the Film/Tape go?
The RED camera is a Digital Cinema camera, recording digital information to a recording media. Media can be either a hard drive or flash based drive. There is a provision via the CF Module to record directly to Compact Flash internally in the camera with no external drive required. This is a highly recommended solution for moving shots. Each 8GB card records the equivalent of a 400' film reel, approximately 4-5 minutes, depending on compression settings.
